How to use MedRevisions effectively for PLAB 1 exam preparation
Click on the above image to watch the video before you continue to read the article given below. The approach we discuss in the above video is a very effective way to complete your preparation with MedRevisions efficiently as it is based on our research and reviews from past exam candidates. More importantly, you will not feel that the material is lengthy, as this method will help you retain information better.
We at MedRevisions recognise that every person has a different method of studying and we try our best to accommodate all our customers to the best of our ability by giving plenty of options for you to choose from. We have created a stepwise approach to study MedRevisions that is used as a base for all study methods. Later on, we discuss precise situations and break them down into categories to go through specific needs according to the time you have and how long you’ve been away from a study setting.
Stepwise plan
Step 1: Questions vs Notes
The journey to successfully preparing for PLAB part 1 begins with analysing yourself and your preferred method of study. Once you figure out how you prefer to study along with your general strengths and weaknesses, you’re already ahead of most that instead choose to follow others. This begins by identifying whether you would like to start by doing questions or reading the notes first. Although it has been scientifically proven that doing questions first will be better for memory retention, you might not be comfortable doing so. In turn, your progress will suffer.
Step 2a: Starting with questions
Our question bank holds over 4000 questions to help you prepare for the PLAB part 1 exam. These questions are carefully designed to mimic the exam type questions or to help you remember a topic quickly. Since every exam is different, we have purposely included questions that vary in length and difficulty in order to prepare for anything that the examiners will throw at you.
We urge you to attempt even our long and difficult questions as the advantages will far outweigh the disadvantages such as expecting a simple exam. We try to cover the entire PLAB part 1 blueprint provided by the General Medical Council UK (GMC UK) which contains a vast variety of subjects. Therefore, nothing is out of scope when it comes to the PLAB part 1 exam.
Our question bank has a filter that separates the high yield questions from the ones that aren’t that common in the exam. We recommend that you start with the high yield questions first by clicking on the check box with the label “Attempt Recalls/High-yield only” as these are very important.
Once you answer a question, read the answer explanations for each answer so you understand why an answer is correct or incorrect. If you feel like you understood the question completely and the answer explanations completely, move on to the next question.
If you feel like you want to read about the topic further, scroll down to our revision notes. These notes are a simplified version of our complete study note. It also has all the important points highlighted along with other useful features such as PLAB clinchers and mnemonics. At the end of our revision note, we have included a key points section. These points highlight the core idea of each topic which can be very useful for your PLAB journey. We encourage you to go directly to the section that is relevant to the question. For example, if the question is asking about the treatment, go directly to the treatment section of the notes. This way you are more concise in what you cover. Also, our question bank will more than likely cover the entirety of the note with different questions. So you would end up going through the entire note with different questions one section at a time rather than going through the entire note repeatedly which can be very time-consuming.
After going through these if you need even deeper explanations, go through our complete study note. You can follow the same principle mentioned above by directly going to the section that is relevant to the question. Along with these exceptional notes, we have included further links to the guidelines, ECG’s, X-rays and YouTube video links to make things easier for you. We at MedRevisions believe in providing all the necessary tools you need in one place instead of you aimlessly searching for them elsewhere.
Step 2b: Starting with notes
With our new Library section, you can even start studying with the notes first instead of the question. In this section, you will find our complete study notes and our revision notes separated according to the subject and topic. You may study the notes before attempting the questions or any time that’s convenient for you. We have also added a feature so you may attempt the questions that belong to that particular study note or revision note within each topic. Therefore, you would not need to study all the notes on a topic at once to answer the questions.
We recommend that you start a topic of your choice with our revision note. These notes are a simplified version of our complete study note. It also has all the important points highlighted along with other useful features such as PLAB clinchers and mnemonics. At the end of our revision note, we have included a key points section. These points highlight the core idea of each topic which can be very useful for your PLAB journey. Then press the “Revise all questions” button to attempt the questions for that topic.
As mentioned before, you should start with the high yield questions first by clicking on the check box with the label “Attempt Recalls/High-yield only”. Once you answer a question, read the answer explanations for each answer so you understand why each answer is correct or incorrect. If you find it difficult to understand the explanation, scroll down to find our revision notes underneath each question.
After going through these if you need even deeper explanations, go through our complete study note. Along with these exceptional notes, we have included further links to the guidelines, ECG’s, X-rays and YouTube video links to make things easier for you. We at MedRevisions believe in providing all the necessary tools you need in one place instead of you aimlessly searching for them elsewhere.
Step 2a & 2b: IMPORTANT INFORMATION
If you find a particular question difficult or want to attempt again, press the “Bookmark” button provided in each question. We believe that you should be able to answer certain questions more than once to completely understand the concept. Therefore, all our bookmarked questions can be attempted as new questions repeatedly.
All of your incorrect questions are automatically inserted into our Smart Revision program. You can even add the correct questions by pressing the “Smart Revision” button provided in each question. You can attempt all these questions in a spaced repetition manner through our Smart Revision section.
Everyone makes mistakes and we are no different. If you find a mistake, oversight, inaccuracy or anything bothersome about a particular question, press the “Feedback” button provided in each question and give us a brief explanation of the problem. We take all feedback seriously and have a team dedicated to this section.
Step 3: Revision
Now that you’ve done the hard part, it’s time to make sense out of everything and revise. You can start this process by attempting the questions in the Smart Revision program slowly. If you keep getting them wrong, they will stay in the program. Then you can attempt the questions that you have in the Bookmarks section. You can go through the Revision Notes for the necessary sections. This is also the perfect time to start going through the Revision Notes from the Library section daily, paying close attention to the Key Points section at the end.
Step 4: Mocks
With our extensive question bank, we are able to offer 23+ complete mocks comprising different questions so they do not repeat. Our mocks are FULLY CUSTOMISABLE. You may complete them at your convenience.
Ever felt guilty about not studying during your commute? How about when you have to attend an event when you should be studying? Whether you have 10 minutes or 3 hours to spare, we got you covered! While you go through daily activities take our customisable mocks according to the time you have because you can try ANY number of questions in ANY number of minutes to keep yourself sharp.
So you’re sitting there and thinking “These are some great features for the mocks, but how can I take full advantage of it?”. Well, let us put your mind at ease and give you a fool-proof plan to get the most out of our mocks!
A common approach to PLAB 1 study guide is to finish the question bank several times and then start mocks in order to get your timing on point for the exam. This could be due to the fact that only limited mocks were available and this was the most effective way to gain the maximum out of them.
We suggest that you complete small (10-30 questions) mocks WHILE you’re completing step 3 (Revision). This allows you to consistently look at topics and questions that you’re not used to, causing the mind to refresh and think in a different approach instead of focusing on a single section throughout the day. When you’re constantly training your mind to look for clues to find the right answers in a timed environment, you automatically condition it to an exam mode.
Since we have created the option for you to archive the mocks, you’re allowed to take UNLIMITED mocks with ENDLESS variations! Using this feature you can take a full 3 hour mocks closer to your exam date (1 month onwards) to guarantee that your timing is spot on for the exam.
Always start with high yield questions first and pay attention to the incorrect questions in the mocks instead of spending time looking at the correct ones. See where the problem lies with your solving method and try to fix it before the exam.
Suggestions based on your situation
We have broken down individuals into categories to suggest a method of study more specific to your needs. These are just suggestions and you should always follow what you’re comfortable with. If you do not belong to any of these categories, you can follow the step by step plan given above as a guideline with your own adjustments.
Category A: Recent graduate/Internship/other medical licensing exams
Category B: Graduated a while back/Been out of practice for a while (determined by you)
Category C: Have 3 months to study
Category D: Have 6 months to study
Category E: Have 1 year or more to study
Category F: Have 1 month or less to study
Category A (Step 2a)
If you feel your medical knowledge is fresh, we recommend you start with our questions first. As you have recently completed your studies, attempting questions first will help recall your memory and make better connections with the material. If you grasp the idea of a topic and can comfortably answer questions, then the notes for that topic can be optional for you.
Category B (Step 2b)
We recommend that you start with our revision notes first. Since it has been a while, we suggest you read the revision notes to get an understanding of the topic before attempting the questions. As explained above, if you need a deeper explanation than the revision note, you can read our very detailed study note.
Category A or B + C
As time is a very valuable asset in your journey, focus on completing steps 1-4 in our study plan.
Category A or B + D
Since you have more time in your journey, focus on completing steps 1-3 in our study plan by answering high yield questions topic wise first (Step 2a). Then you should either attempt the non-high yield questions for complete comprehension OR attempt the mocks which include all the questions (high yield and non-high yield). If you finish early, reset the mocks by pressing the archive button and repeat steps 3 and 4. This way you are fully prepared for the exam.
Category A or B + E
Time is not a factor in your situation and all our 1 year plans come with a complete reset of the entire question bank. Therefore, instead of taking things slow, attempt to completely cover the above plan twice. We believe you can gain the knowledge necessary in 6 months and doing this twice will put you in a very favourable position.
Category F
Even with 1 month or less until your exam, MedRevisions can help you prepare to pass the PLAB 1 exam. In this situation, we suggest you focus on our mocks section with the high yield questions. In preparation for the PLAB 1 exam, it is vital to put yourself in exam conditions. Therefore, our mocks give you the best chance of attempting a lot of questions in a short period of time for practice and to develop excellent time management skills.
