Are you a medical student looking to sit the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA) exam

Then this article is for you. We will discuss the format of the test, the topics it covers and how to revise for it.

GMC stated that the UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA) is a new examination available in 2024 and The UKMLA will replace the current Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam, and all UK medical students will be required to take the exam to graduate.

Update: (On February 2024 GMC had a new announcement for international medical students who intends to sit for the PLAB 1 exam on August 2024 onwards that the PLAB 1 exam will be based on the MLA content map, find out more about the change and how to prepare for it here.)

If you intend to practise medicine in the United Kingdom, it is critical to understand the UKMLA and how to prepare for it.

GMC is planning to maintain high standards for UK medical students and guarantee that they are adequately equipped to practise medicine in the UK. Currently, GMC is responsible for the PLAB exam, for which we at Medrevisions provide an outstanding question bank and notes that have helped thousands of doctors pass on their first attempt.

What is the format of the UKMLA test, and how will it function?

The UKMLA is a two-part assessment exam like the PLAB exam. It is called:

  • AKT (Applied Knowledge Test)

  • CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment)

Both components will assess a range of knowledge and competencies mentioned in the MLA syllabus, also known as the MLA content map, which is similar to the PLAB 1 exam syllabus, for which we provide an outstanding platform that covers all the topics given in the PLAB 1 syllabus extensively.

What is the format of AKT (Applied Knowledge Test)?

GMC states, “The AKT will be similar to the current PLAB 1 exam” it will be composed of single-best-answer (SBA) questions. This exam will be the same for all UK students and international medical graduates. The test will run four times a year for international candidates at several locations worldwide. For UK students, AKT will replace the medical school final exam. Thousands of past PLAB 1 candidates have used our resource as their primary study material and aced their exams.

As GMC states, “The AKT will be similar to the current PLAB 1 exam” our PLAB exam content will help you prepare for the UKMLA. When we launch our UKMLA plan, and If you have an active PLAB 1 subscription, we will transfer it for free to a UKMLA plan. Until then, you can pay for a 2-year subscription and get access to an additional year for FREE. You can follow the link given below and get an additional 10% discount on all our plans.

Moreover, UKMLA will be a computer-based exam, unlike the paper-based PLAB 1 exam. This should help you immensely as you will be able to save time during the exam since it will be similar to using our platform.

What is the format of the CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment) exam?

CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment) exam will be similar to PLAB 2, which is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) exam and will take place at GMC’s Clinical Assessment Center in Manchester.
